What is the Stephen Ministry?
RiverGlen Christian Church’s Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives such as: grief, separation or divorce, serious illness, loss of employment, or any other painful life situation or crisis. It is made up of Stephen Ministers who are gifted and trained to serve as care givers. A referral system helps match the needs of the care receiver with the right Stephen Minister.
What is a Stephen Minister?
Stephen Ministers receive 50-hours of initial training, followed by ongoing education and supervision to ensure highest quality Christian care.
A Stephen Minister is not…
- a counselor, problem-solver or casual visitor
A Stephen Minister is someone…
- gifted for caregiving ...selected to serve in this role
- who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care
- who walks beside another who is hurting
- who listens, prays, supports, and encourages
- who will “be there” for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully on a regular basis
To assure an understanding of what a Stephen Minister does and does not do, you can review the Stephen Ministry Agreement online here.
